Open & Affirming Covenant
We, the people of Colonial Park United Church of Christ, as a matter of faith declare our place of worship and learning to be open and affirming and a safe place for all.
We acknowledge that throughout history, the Christian Church has often condemned and excluded gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people from the community of faith, or has condoned such condemnation and exclusion by its silence. We also recognize the Church has historically used Scripture to support these and other forms of religious oppression and unjust institutions.
We hold that such discrimination and oppression is incompatible with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We invite people of all races and ethnic variations, mental, and physical abilities, socioeconomic status, ages, national origin, genders, gender identities and expressions, and sexual orientation to experience the sense of family, community, and hope found in Christ.
You are welcome and invited to participate in the full life of the church. Our faith calls us to act as Jesus Christ taught, extending an extravagant welcome to all in Christian love. We will denounce all acts of harassment, discrimination, and violence against God’s people. This open and affirming designation is a continuation of the statement, “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”
"Love one another. ... As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
John 13:34-35
Creation Justice Covenant
We recognize and believe in God as the Creator of the Earth, that humans are interconnected to each other and all of creation on Earth, and that when we harm the Earth we dishonor God. As people of faith, we recognize the impact of our actions on our neighbors and on the global community, that environmental justice and social justice are linked such that environmental degradation including the crisis of climate change disproportionately causes suffering to those marginalized without sufficient resources or voice.
Consequently, we commit ourselves as faithful stewards of the Earth and advocates of social justice, both as individuals and as a congregation, to care for, heal and restore creation through our actions in collaboration with each other and with those beyond our own community, both faith and secular allies, in this effort.
